Soundings Trade Only, a leading marine industry trade publication, is seeking a skilled and experienced senior editor to join our editorial team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conceiving and writing long- and short-form stories; reporting and writing daily industry news; conducting interviews with key industry participants; participating in the editorial and production process for monthly print issues; representing the brand at trade events; and assisting with shaping the voice and direction of the publication, driving content strategy and maintaining editorial standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write and report up to five daily trade news stories for the Trade Only Today e-newsletter, which deploys Monday-Friday each week.
  • Identify news stories for follow-up original reporting, both in the print and digital products.
  • Participate in the conception, writing, reporting and production of short- and long-form stories, interviews and two data-driven columns for the Soundings Trade Only print issues each month.
  • Review and edit digital and print content for clarity, coherence, accuracy and adherence to AP and in-house style guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the editor-in-chief to develop and execute new content strategies and ideas while identifying emerging trends.
  • Contribute to editorial planning meetings and strategic discussions.
  • Represent brand and report on industry trade conferences and shows across the United States and occasionally abroad.
  • Conduct on-camera interviews as needed, both for original reporting and at applicable trade shows and events.
  • Post and monitor print and digital content daily to social media channels.
  • Collaborate with production department by sourcing high-quality artwork and photography for print layouts in Soundings Trade Only.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices and new technologies.
  • Serve as stand-in for editor-in-chief during events and scheduled time off.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in editorial roles, with at least 3-5 years in a senior position.
  • Proven track record in writing, editing, reporting and magazine production.
  • Must be able to efficiently wield technology to produce print and digital products.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of editorial standards, style guides and content management systems.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.

Preferred Skills:

  • Well-versed in the Adobe Creative Suite, including InCopy and InDesign. Photoshop and Premiere experience a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and adjacent Google software.
  • Experience with digital content management systems, SEO best practices and social media posting and monitoring.
  • Strong awareness of AP Style with the ability to self-edit on tight, recurring deadlines.
  • Boating and boating industry experience a plus.
  • Experience shooting or editing video/audio a plus.
